About the Course

GCSE Biology

Unit 1

The Cell

Cells are the smallest unit of life, but that doesn’t mean they are simple! This course explores the structures of different cells and how these structures enable them to perform specialised functions.  Learners will also discover some important cellular processes, including cell division, differentiation, and transport.

This course is aligned with the learning objectives of GCSE Biology. It also provides an excellent foundation for anyone who wants to understand the key principles of cell biology and how they apply in the real world.

Edexcel, AQA, CCEA, OCR and National Cirriculum Key Stages

Unit 2

Principles of organisation and digestion

Cells are the basic building blocks of the human body – form complex multicellular organisms like animals and plants? Closely following the GCSE Biology curriculum, this course helps learners discover the organisation and function of different levels of organisation in plants and humans.

This unit delves deep into one example in detail, the human digestive and covers the process of digestion following the GCSE curriculum.

Unit 3

Control and coordination in animals & Homeostasis

Many say that achieving happiness in life is all about finding the right balance; the same is true for living things! This course allows learners to discover the control systems in place to keep the body in an optimal state, including the coordination of the nervous and hormonal systems of the human body. It also covers the process by which the human body maintains a stable and relatively constant internal environment, homeostasis. Just like humans, plants produce hormones too.

This unit will cover the control and coordination in plants too. By the end, learners will have a solid understanding of many of the functions these systems regulate, including reproduction, blood sugar levels, and body temperature.

Exchange & Transport of substanc

Unit 4

Exchange & Transport of Substances in Animals

We use different kinds of transport systems to move from one place to the other. This includes cars, aeroplanes and ships. Similarly, there are different systems in the body of animals that help them in the processes of exchange and transport of substances. They are the respiratory system and the circulatory system.

This course will cover these two body systems explaining their structures and the process of exchange, respiration and transport in the body. This course is aligned with the learning objectives of GCSE Biology.

Reproduction and contraception

Unit 5

Structures in Plants & Their Functions

Humans need different body systems to perform various roles in the body. Similarly, plants need different systems too. However, these systems are not the same in plants. Plants have different organs and organ systems that help them perform roles such as transport, respiration, and photosynthesis.

At the end of this unit, learners will have a solid understanding of the plant’s organs and organ systems along with their roles. The course also covers the process of photosynthesis following the GCSE curriculum.

Reproduction

Unit 6

Reproduction and Birth Control in Humans

Like all animals, the human body can reproduce and give birth to its own babies. This is possible because of the reproductive system. This course will cover various activities that make the reproductive system capable of giving birth to babies. This will also cover various methods developed by us to control the birth of the babies.

This unit also describes infertility along with the treatment options to manage this. At the end of this unit, the learner will have a deep understanding of puberty, menstrual cycle, contraceptive method, and in-vitro fertilization techniques.

Diseases, immunity, and treatment

Unit 7

Diseases, Immunity, and Treatment

Understanding how the body responds to external pathogens has never been so crucial as it is in a post-pandemic world. By the end of this GCSE-level course, learners will recognise pathogenic microorganisms and be able to describe some of the diseases they cause.

Additionally, this course describes the defence mechanisms that help plants and animals fight disease. It also details how science has helped us develop vaccines and drugs to prevent and treat infectious diseases.

Unit 8

Genetics

“You have your dad’s eyes.” “She’s very clever, just like her mother.” Sound familiar?

But why do we inherit some traits from our parents and not others? Students of this GCSE-level course will learn about how DNA is passed on to offspring by reproduction and how our genes control our characteristics. This course will also allow students to develop their understanding of various inherited disorders. Also, it will cover the two types of reproduction and their role in genetics.

Natural Selection, evolution, and genetic engineering

Unit 9

Natural Selection, Evolution, and Genetic Engineering

Have you ever noticed the evolution in your appearance over time? For example, when you were a kid, you might have had a different hairstyle and choice of clothes. Also, you had a shorter height. Similarly, a lot of changes are seen in the entire species over several generations. This process is evolution and is based on the concept of natural selection.

This unit will provide the learner with a detailed understanding of these concepts and the concept of variation covering the learning outcomes of the GCSE curriculum. This unit also covers the different methods of genetic engineering.

Ecology

Unit 10

Ecology

To protect our planet from the effects of climate change, we need to understand how organisms interact with their environment. This unit provides learners with the resources required to meet the learning objectives of GCSE ecology. These include understanding how ecosystems are organised, the importance of biodiversity, and how energy is transferred through ecosystems.

Finally, this course discusses how human activities impact ecosystems and how we might maintain both biodiversity and food security in the future.

known as biomolecules

Unit 11

Biomolecules

Our food is made up of various kinds of molecules that help our body in different ways. For example, protein builds up the body’s muscular system, and ions such as calcium make our bones strong. These molecules are known as biomolecules.

This unit will provide the learners with a solid understanding of the structure and functions of various kinds of biomolecules, covering the learning outcomes of the IGCSE curriculum.
